Though more recently worked than the Merstham quarries are deteriorating faster. There have been a number of collapses in recent years. They were originally worked for building stone and hearthstone and approximately 5 miles of workings are accessible today.

The land is owned by Tandridge District. Access to the mine is permitted on an occasional basis, and access control has been devolved to Wealden Cave and Mine Society. Precise details of all members of any party wishing to visit the mine are required, along with disclaimers and proof of insurance. Please contact the WCMS Surrey Mines Agent via the committee page of www.wcms.org.uk.

The area is heavily overgrown and the entrance is difficult to locate, especially in summer. The sixteen metre shaft is capped and locked. A 50 foot ladder requires a short belay to ironwork at the top of the shaft.

The maximum party size is 6. No leader is required. Keys are held by the major Mendip Clubs. These are the ACG, BEC, CSS, MCG, MNRC, SMCC and WCC. The cave is closed from 1st October to 30th April to protect the hibernating bats. NB the recently dug out crawl near the entrance of Hillier's has been seen to sump up very quickly due to the run off from the quarry floor. Bear in mind that the squeeze that links Hillier's to Fairy is tight so that it possible to become trapped in Hillier's. Balch's Cave is a well known bat hibernacula and has been grilled to protect the resident bat colony.

The Fairy Caves Management Committee administers the access to this cave on behalf of the quarry owners. Access is open to bona fide caving clubs. All cavers visiting the cave must have adequate public liability insurance, such as the BCA’s.

Please phone or write, with SAE, to the Management Committee to advise of your intended visiting date. This is important since the owners are supplied with a list of intended trips and regular checks are made at the quarry by security personnel.

A car park, with the CSCC padlock, is provided for visiting cavers. You are asked to make use of this facility rather than parking on the road since the road is narrow and despite its appearance, takes a lot of 38ton lorry traffic.

An alternative option is to park at the Cerberus Hut, half a mile up the hill, for a small goodwill fee. Be sure to let them know you are leaving your car. There have not been any reported car break-ins but you should always remove valuables from display anyway.

BLACKNOR HOLE
Portland (Dorset)

The caves of this area are described in The Caves Of The Isle Of Portland by Mike O’Connor and Nigel Graham, Published 1996 by the WCC, ISBN 0 9500433 4 6.

Portland is heavily built up where it has not been quarried. Consequently the access details given here are practically unique in being directions to car parks rather than cave access notes.

Portland has no known formal access requirements, however many of the caves are reached from residential streets so please observe the usual courtesies e.g. no gung-ho driving, inconsiderate parking, indiscreet changing accompanied by high powered cassette players and/or noisy bad language.

None of the caves are gated but a few lie within private enclosures (quarries). It is to be hoped that this freedom is reflected in responsible caving though sadly some of the caves are showing signs of wear. Even Blacknor, with its vertiginous entrance in a high cliff has suffered and worse still formations have been vandalised and even stolen from some caves. There are no restrictions on lighting but please use acetylene considerately. Please avoid making soot marks and/or leaving carbide dumps. If using carbide please note that most of the caves are dry or very nearly so.
The quarries are by and large open and some of the quarry access roads are public footpaths. The disused workings have a traditional recreational use and are rich in wildlife, despite illegal rubbish tipping. Strictly speaking the working quarries should only be entered with permission, although in the past local cavers have found that access can be obtained out of working hours without permission. Should you choose this latter course please do not climb upon, or tamper with, the vehicles and/or plant. You should also keep clear of newly blasted faces and should be polite, and leave the quarry quietly, if challenged. The CSCC cannot condone illegal access to any site of speleological interest.

Warning Cavers and Climbers on Portland, particularly at Westland, have had their ropes cut by vandals. If you cannot leave a sentry use a rigging technique that will not fail irretrievably under tampering.

This area contains Portland’s two longest caves, BLACKNOR HOLE and SANDY HOLE, and several large rift caves. Various public footpaths lead to the cliffs, but the nearest car park is in the south west corner of the housing estate. Enter the estate from the main road, via Westcliff Road (close to the pub and chip shop), at its end, turn left into Grangecroft Road, by the telephone kiosk, and follow the road to the car park alongside the playground. Recently this car park has sprouted a "Private Parking" sign. The local cavers say it is difficult to see what, if any, real authority this sign has, since locals have been visiting here for years. It is probably better to park well away from the flats and avoid being a nuisance.

A gate in the fence opens onto the cliff top meadows. Blacknor Fort is along the cliffs to the north. The Fort, directly above Blacknor Hole, and fronting the cave's entrance pitch, is a private dwelling. Ownership apparently extends to the cliff face itself, although a public path runs along the top.

Alternatively, walk to Blacknor along the track serving the old Fort, starting by the cemetery gates. It is marked "Private and Public Footpath" and must not be driven along.

The landowner has denied access to the cave. Negotiations are continuing, so please respect the landowners wishes

This is the second largest underground quarry open to cavers and is part of a complex of passages beneath Farleigh Down, situated directly south east of Bathford. Most of the hillside is owned by Sir Charles Hobhouse and Friends of the Earth, but some areas are leased to the Avon Wildlife Trust. Historically at the request of Sir Charles Hobhouse access to Brown’s Folly and all other sites on his land was controlled by the CSCC. There are two gated entrances to the mine which should be locked with a CSCC key outside the bat season. Keys are available from the major Mendip clubs. No access during the bat season (October to April inclusive). The third entrance, nearest the car park, has a bat grill and is inaccessible. Currently access is uncertain. Please check when collecting the key.

A new entrance was constructed in 2002 with access controlled by the AWT. Phone 01179-177270 for current access information via this entrance.

AWT have CLOSED the mine until further notice, pending a Mines Inspectors report.

The following information is supplied by the CCC Ltd. This Company has been set up to administer access to several square miles of land in the area surrounding Charterhouse on Mendip on which are located numerous cave entrances and sites of speleological and archaeological interest. The land is a nature reserve owned by the SWT. By agreement amongst Mendip Caving clubs, the CCC Ltd. was formed. It administers caving access to the land by means of a lease with SWT. It comprises representatives of ten caving clubs. These are the ACG, BEC, CSS, MCG, MNRC, SMCC, SBSS, TCC, UBSS and the WCC.

Having due regard for its legal obligations, the Company has made every possible effort to simplify access arrangements.

PERMITS AND INSURANCE
All cavers visiting these caves require a valid permit. Permits may be issued by any one of the ten member clubs to their own club members and guests. Permits may also be issued by the Honorary Permit Secretary of CCC Ltd. to cavers wishing to visit the area as guests of the Company. I.e. those who are unable to make a guest arrangement with a Member Club.
Guests may obtain a Temporary Permit which covers the duration of their visit to the area (14 days) and such permits are charged at 50p each. These charges provide revenue which helps to defray the costs of insurance and other expenses; the majority of such expenses being met by subvention from the Member Clubs.

The committee maintains a public liability insurance to indemnify both itself and SWT against claims arising out of caving activities.

CCC Ltd recommends, but does not require, for your own and your caving companions benefit that you are insured. BCA member clubs are able to issue temporary public liability caving insurance to their guests for a small fee.

Applications for permits must be accompanied by a completed indemnity form available from either a Member Club or from the Honorary Permit Secretary and the appropriate remittance. The Permit Secretary is currently:
Graham Mullan, 38 Delvin Road, Westbury on Trym, Bristol, BS10 5EJ. Tel: 01179-502556.
E-mail: graham.mullan [@] wotcc.org.uk

ACCESS TO THE CAVES
To comply with the regulations under the licence and sub-licence, caves in the area are required to be gated. However there is no difficulty in obtaining a key for the caves concerned:- G.B. Cave, Longwood and Rhino Rift. Similarly there should be no problems in obtaining a leader for a visit to Charterhouse Cave. Other small sites in the area include Timber Hole and Read’s Grotto.

Although there is no formal booking system, cavers visiting the area as guests of a Member Club or of the Committee are requested to give one month’s notice of an intended visit to the Permit Secretary of CCC Ltd. This will allow the necessary arrangements to be made on time.

CONSERVATION OF THE CAVES
The Committee is deeply concerned that maximum regard is given to cave conservation and SWT insist that activities in, and around, the caves do not constitute a public health hazard. All cavers are required to abide by the following rules:-

1. No-one under the age of 16 years is permitted in the caves. Persons aged between 16 and 18 years must provide a completed parental consent form before a permit can be issued.
2. Novices must not be introduced to caving in the Charterhouse area caves.
3. Caves should be kept locked at all times.
4. The party size in any cave is restricted to 6, except in Charterhouse Cave where it is 3 plus a leader.
5. No digging is allowed nor are fixed aids to be placed without the express permission of the Company.
6. No carbide lamps are to be used in G.B. or Charterhouse Caves.
7. These caves are on Nature Reserves, respect the regulations governing these, as shown on the signs at the gates, both above and below ground.

The cave is locked and access to the cave is only available with an approved leader. Each member club of the CCC Ltd. has two leaders. The cave must remain locked at all times and parties are requested to lock the door behind them on entry and upon departure. Party size is limited to four including the leader. No acetylene (carbide) lamps are permitted. No novices or those under sixteen years old are allowed into the cave.

No leader is required.

The Fairy Caves Management Committee administers the access to this cave on behalf of the quarry owners. Access is open to bona fide caving clubs. All cavers visiting the cave must have adequate public liability insurance, such as the BCA’s.

The gated entrance to these workings is in an old quarry at Coombe Down. The underground quarry connects to The Firs and is underneath a housing estate. Bath City Council are currently proposing to infill part of the site. Some limited access may be possible. Keys are held by the owners and access is controlled by English Nature.
English Nature has an interest in the bat population and visits will not be allowed in the hibernating season which runs approximately from October to April inclusive.
Requests to visit this site should be made to the CSCC Conservation and Access Officer who will authorise collection of keys from the owners. The main gate to the tip must be used as the only route to the quarry. Outside of working hours this must be kept locked and the owners have warned that failure to comply with this may lead to prosecution of the visitors should any unauthorised tipping occur.

NB it is possible to open the Hillier's gate from the inside without a key.

The Fairy Caves Management Committee administers the access to this cave on behalf of the quarry owners. Access is open to bona fide caving clubs. All cavers visiting the cave must have adequate public liability insurance, such as the BCA’s.

The cave is locked and all CCC Ltd member clubs hold a key for the use of their own members and for guests. Other clubs may obtain a key, on loan, from a member club or from the CCC Ltd Honorary Permit Secretary.
The cave must remain locked at all times and parties are requested to lock the door behind them on entry and upon departure. It is the responsibility of each caver to satisfy himself that any tackle used in the cave is in good condition. The use of acetylene (carbide) lamps is not permitted in the cave and parties are limited to SIX persons including the leader. No novices or those under sixteen years old are allowed into the cave.

Park just within the trading estate in Wide Street. Cross Wide Street and enter the quarries via a track from the north east of the car breakers lay by opposite the estate entrance.

The cave is locked and all CCC Ltd member clubs hold a key for the use of their own members and for guests. Other Clubs and guests of the CCC Ltd may obtain a key, on loan, from the Honorary Permit Secretary.
The cave must remain locked at all times and parties are requested to lock the door behind them on entry and upon departure. Party size is limited to six. There is no requirement for guest parties to be accompanied in the cave. The use of acetylene lamps is not permitted in the cave. No novices or those under sixteen years old are allowed into the cave.

This notice has been issued by BW about the danger of flooding in the cave:

DANGER TAKE CARE SEVERE AND SUDDEN FLOODING IN THE LONGWOOD CAVE

Longwood has long been known to be dangerous because of the risk of flooding from a stream. The danger is even greater now because the cave is likely to flood more often. Pumps that take water from the springs at Charterhouse will now stop working automatically. This can cause a sudden flood wave making some passages impassable and the exit and entrance extremely difficult to negotiate. There are warning notices stressing this danger at the cave entrance. Access to the cave is controlled by CCC Ltd, and only cavers holding a current CCC Ltd permit should enter the cave.

There is no right of way to Sandford Hill across the fields to the north, i.e. directly from Sandford. The owner is concerned about damage to fences and complaints from residents in Sandford. Approach the caves: - Sandford Levvy, Mangle Hole, and Triple Hole via one of the public footpaths as marked on the current O.S. map. In recent years the farmer has chosen to close the cave during the summer and autumn months due to poor air quality underground. There have been occasional reports that people with sensitive skin have experienced discomfort following trips here. It would be helpful if such occurrences were reported to the C & A Officer. Call at Manor Farm (ST 498 558). (Farmer - Mr Jeffries). Goodwill fee. It is requested that all cavers must be out of the cave by 10 p.m.

PORTLAND BILL

The Bill is the southern tip of Portland. All the Southwell - Bill Road is a clearway to the Pay and Display car park at The Bill. You may find a few discreet parking spots on side roads a little before this but you should not drive along the narrow, private tracks leaving the left (east) side of the road

If exiting through Swildon’s Hole the goodwill fee should be paid in advance. The cave is a serious undertaking. It is strenuous and very tight in places. NOTE: Weil’s disease has been contracted from this cave. Exit via the Mud Sump in Swildon’s Hole may not be possible since it is unbailable from the Priddy Green Sink side - it is not a free dive. Exit via Trouble Series is a serious undertaking. The ducks may require a large amount of bailing. The third duck may not bail open, leaving you trapped between the ducks. Seek local advice if you plan to do this trip and allow plenty of time for bailing the ducks.

To date the only natural caves known in this large limestone area are the numerous sea caves west of Swanage. This is an important climbing area and is subject to seasonal access restrictions. You should refer to the Climbers’ guidebooks and “High” magazine. Prospecting for caves is underway but the chances of significant finds seem very slight.
Purbeck has old stone mines, the best known being Tilly Whim Caves at Durlston, once a show mine but now closed due to instability. Some mines are gated bat roosts with access only to research zoologists. Others have been recently fenced off for safety as they are extremely unstable.
Geology texts refer to oil shale adits near Kimmeridge. If they still exist, doubtless they will be dangerously loose.

It is essential that you call at Farthings Farm for permission. It would be better still if permission was requested in writing some time in advance. The easiest approach is to take the minor road from the southern end of the town westwards for one mile. This will bring you to Farthings Farm, Fifty yards north east of the farm house a track leaves the road and a quarry is reached after another 75 yards. The cave is found in the quarry face. The owner has requested no novices.

A warden system operates. The party size is limited to 4 plus warden. No novices. No carbide. Please wear clean oversuits.

The Fairy Caves Management Committee administers the access to this cave on behalf of the quarry owners. Access is open to bona fide caving clubs. All cavers visiting the cave must have adequate public liability insurance, such as the BCA’s.

Please write, with SAE, to the Management Committee with at least six weeks notice of the intended trip. A conservation fee of ÂŁ1.00 (minimum) per person is payable. The total number of trips per year is limited so please be patient if your chosen dates are not available.

Please make a courtesy call to the landowner, Mrs M Rignall, Northwood Mill, Folly Lane, Shipham. Park cars in the Square, not in the lane or by the field gate, and change by the mine entrance out of sight of the local residents. Please Note that due to the proximity of the mine entrance to the village it is essential that you lock the gate whilst in the mine and check that the gate is securely locked before leaving. Failure to do this will jeopardise future access.

Please note that mines can be unstable, don't touch props or stacks of miners deads. Please leave any artifacts where you find them for others to enjoy.

This site is gated and locked. Keys are held by the major Mendip Clubs. These are the ACG, BEC, CSS, MCG, MNRC, SMCC and WCC. Arrangements should be made with any one of these clubs to borrow the key.
This mine is on land owned by Sir Charles Hobhouse and the conditions of access are the same as for Brown’s Folly. The main entrance collapsed in April 1998 and remains very unstable. The side entrance is very tight and is held up with the remains of old chairs. Take care. The top of the crane at the end of the main passage is in a precarious state. DO NOT attempt to move it or it may fall on you.
There is no parking space on the main road adjacent to the mine and an agreement has been reached with the landlords of the Swan Inn, situated opposite the entrance, for visitors to use the pub car park. Cars should be parked tidily parallel to the road at the upper end of the car park furthest from the Inn. Please call on the landlord to ask for permission to park, informing him which cars are being left. If he is unavailable please leave a note in one vehicle stating you have gone down the mine and giving car numbers with estimated party times in and out.

Goodwill fee (ÂŁ1), place in the letterbox at New Barn, in the yard past the changing barn. Park carefully on the gravel surface opposite the barn. Avoid parking on the village green if possible, especially in winter when damage to the green by vehicles often annoys villagers. Additional parking is available on the top green (but not the village hall car park). The goodwill must always be paid. ALWAYS change in Manor Farm barn, near naked cavers cause considerable offence to villagers. Do not urinate in the barn, not only is it anti-social, but it pollutes the milk. The farmer, Mr. Robin Main, has said that no ill-equipped parties of children should enter the cave.

The Mud Sump is bailable again. Do your bit each trip to keep it open.

There is no right of way to Sandford Hill across the fields to the north, i.e. directly from Sandford. The owner is concerned about damage to fences and complaints from residents in Sandford. Approach the caves: - Sandford Levvy, Mangle Hole, and Triple Hole via one of the public footpaths as marked on the current O.S. map. The caves can be approached along the hill from either east or west, or alternatively directly over the hill from the south. Do not change on the estate.

No access agreement is currently in force. Speak to the landowner (ARC) or the quarry manager. The entrance contains dead animal and is rather unwholesome. Disease has been reported.

Ample roadside parking. The track from The Verne to Grove Road is now gated but is a public footpath.

A warden system operates. The party size is limited to 2 plus warden. No novices.

Access is not generally allowed to these caves. Do not contact the owner as requests will be refused. Some very limited visits are possible through contact with local cavers. Cave Diving is only possible through the CDG.
